Rosalic test

Dear Sir,

We have been facing the problem of rosalic acid positive test in milk after 24 hours of milking in some of the areas of our milk union.

Initially milk shows rosalic test negative and the same milk give positive test even no neutralizer is added in to it.

Kindly suggest the way forward so as to resolve the problem.

Your query on Rosalic acid Test.

Dear Shri Shankhdhar,

The rosalic acid test is based on the pH of milk - it detects alkaline pH.

The problem indicated by you is unique and we have not come across the same earlier. There is no readily known scientific reason of the pattern of the test results indicated by you. Further, information on the seasonality of the problem, area in which it is encountered, feeding practices in that area/season, incidences of mastitis etc.is required to make an assesment of the problem.

Nevertheless, you may like to try the following:

1. Ensure that the storage tank/silo in which the milk in question is stored is rinsed properly after cleaning.

2. Ensure that there is no mixing of alkali into the milk in the storage tank/silo from the CIP circuit.

3. Ascertain that there is no adulteration of milk with some chemical which may make the milk alkaline over a period of time.

Regards.
