Bargur breed of buffalo is also known as “Malai Erumai or Malai Emmai”. Malai means hills; Erumai/Emmai means buffalo. Breeding tract is Erode district of Tamilnadu. This breed is mainly used for manure and milk. Milk is mainly used for house hold consumption as curd and butter milk. This breed of buffalo is maintained only on grazing in the forest area. Colour of the buffalo is brownish black and brown. This buffalo is medium in size with coat colours varying from black to light brown and brownish black. Muzzle and eyelids are black, tail switch is brownish black and hooves are grey in colour. Horns are Curved backward and inward. Medium sized in males and medium to long in females. Milk yield of this buffalo ranges from 1.5 to 2.0 litres per day with an average milk fat of 8.6 %.
