Also known as “Desi” and mainly used for draught, meat and milk. Breeding tract includes Raipur, Bilaspur, Sarguja, Kanker, Mahasumund, Dhamtari, Kavardha, Korba/Kovamha, Jashpur, Balrampur, Bemetara, Mungeli and Baloda Bazar districts of Chattisgarh. Common breeding tract is north hilly, central plains and Bastar plateau region of Chhattisgarh. Chhattisgarhi buffalo bullocks are preferred over cow bullocks for ploughing the rice fields (especially during monsoon). Colour of the buffalo is mostly black but sometimes grey colour also found. Medium sized buffaloes having straight head, large and heavy horns which are curved laterally backwards and then going up with tip pointing upwards. These buffalo are slow maturing animals and average milkers. ‘Peda’ made from milk of these buffaloes is famous milk product. The average lactation yield of this buffalo is 1180 kg (ranges from 1100 to 1300 kg) with an average milk fat is 9.49 (ranges from 5.5 to 13.9 %).
