Carbonate Reagents

Hydrochloric acid (1:1)

Procedure

Put a small portion of the carbonate sample on watch glass. Add 4 to 5 drops of hydrochloric acid (1:1) and heat slightly. Observe it with hand lens.

Positive results

If carbonate is present, it will produce effervescence.
